Ann Carpenter's painting for her SALA workshop

Ink, stick and soft pastel workshop with Ann Carpenter – Saturday 29 August

Saturday 29 August 2026 | 10am – 12pm

This August, celebrate the South Australian Living Artists (SALA) Festival at Zema Estate with a creative workshop led by acclaimed local artist Ann Carpenter.

If you’ve ever felt like you’re trying too hard to achieve the “perfect” drawing, this workshop is your chance to let go, experiment and discover a more expressive way of creating.

Working from the natural beauty of gum leaves, birds and trees, Ann will guide participants through the unique process of drawing with ink and a simple stick rather than a traditional pen or brush. This relaxed approach encourages freedom of movement, expressive mark-making and unexpected results.

You’ll learn how to create tonal depth using water and minimal brushwork before enhancing your artwork with vibrant soft pastels once the ink has dried. Throughout the workshop, Ann will share techniques that help build confidence, encourage creativity and remind us that sometimes the best artwork comes from embracing the unexpected.

Whether you’re a complete beginner or an experienced artist looking to try something different, this welcoming workshop is designed for all skill levels. It’s a wonderful opportunity to slow down, immerse yourself in creativity and enjoy a morning surrounded by the relaxed atmosphere of Zema Estate.

Staying afterwards for a complimentary wine tasting, or browsing our Cellar Door and local produce.

Ruth Schubert SALA Festival workshop - Cyanotype Printing

Cyanotype Printing with Ruth Schubert – Sunday 30 August

Sunday 30 August 2026 | 10am – 12pm

Step into one of photography’s earliest artistic processes and create your own stunning Prussian Blue prints during this hands-on SALA Festival workshop at Zema Estate.

Cyanotype is a simple yet fascinating photographic printing technique that uses sunlight to produce beautiful blue-and-white images. First developed in the 1840s, this timeless process remains popular with artists and makers for its striking results and creative possibilities.

During this interactive workshop, you’ll learn how to create your own cyanotype prints using natural objects and everyday materials. Bring along treasures such as feathers, leaves, flowers or pieces of old lace to create unique compositions that capture the intricate details of each object in rich shades of Prussian Blue.

No previous artistic experience is required, making this workshop perfect for beginners, curious creatives and anyone wanting to try something different. All prepared cyanotype paper is provided, and you’ll be guided through each step of the printing process as your designs are transformed by the power of sunlight.

Suitable for adults and children aged 10 years and over (children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian), this workshop offers a fun and memorable way to explore art, science and creativity together.

After the workshop, why not stay and enjoy everything Zema Estate has to offer? Relax with a complimentary wine tasting, browse our Cellar Door, or simply soak up the beautiful surroundings of Coonawarra.
